PUBG Corp, which is owned by Korean publisher Bluehole which is the studio behind the popular game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, has filed a lawsuit against Epic Games for copyright violation over its own popular game, Fortnite.

An injunction has been filed with the Seoul Central District Court which alleges that Epic Games is guilty of copyright infringement which The Korea Times writes about here. The injunction was actually filed in January 2018, but because the wheels of justice move slowly we're really only hearing about it now.

The claim seems to be centred around Fortnite's Battle Royale mode and Bluehole seeming to be of the opinion that it copied PUBG's items and user interface.

I am not a lawyer or expert on Korean copyright laws, but I have eyes and while PUBG and Fortnite share a similar concept in their 'last man standing' gameplay, the two games are completely different to one another. Fortnite is an arcade style game that reminds me of Blizzard's game OverWatch and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds focuses on more realism style gameplay and has a different feel.

The only overlap between Fortnite and PUBG is the concept of a 'storm' that closes in around you, with the playable map area shrinking in size every few minutes, eventually forcing players to fight within a small patch of the map until a single victor emerges.

Bluehole does not deserve to win this lawsuit and honestly, I would be surprised if they did. It feels like a last ditch effort and desperate attempt from a company that lost to Epic Games' Fortnite which doesn't suffer from the issues that plagued PUBG and still do, such as the hacks that plague the game like a virus making it virtually unplayable (at least when I played it).

As a developer, PUBG is a simple, low-effort game that any small team or single games developer can make with the Unreal engine. PUBG's creators for so long failed to fix the issues that affect the game, they made their money and essentially stuck their middle finger up at the fans who wanted to see PUBG succeed.

Just look at the reviews for PUBG over on Steam, the reviews are overwhelmingly negative. All of the assets in PUBG to my knowledge were from an asset store anyway, how can you claim uniqueness when your game isn't unique?

Can you copyright a gameplay concept? Well, we are about to find out. But my money is on Bluehole losing this battle. What's next, Call of Duty suing Battlefield?
